After coming back to bowls after few years and after playing in some of best north Manchester leagues I moved to Cheshire to lovely village of Whitley. There lies the stunning Chetwode Arms with its super fast well looked after green. I was asked to join the team there and after joining Cheshire County and the B.C.G.B.A i submitted my registration fees and was given my membership cards. The club secretary registered me and I played and won my first game in nearly 20 years as had not played in all that time. A week later I was told that my game for forfeited and all the points were given to the opposing team. The reason apparently was that I had joined the league too late! We had 6 - 7 games left in the season. I thought the rule was totally ridiculous and wondered who felt the same?
Surely bowls needs to encourage new players not have silly rules preventing them from joining new clubs and teams. Even the county registrar wasnt aware of the rule of The Frodsham League. Many of the league members were opposed to the rules too as sometimes they havent enough players for matches due to illness or people on holidays etc.
It seems odd that a league set up for the enjoyment of members goes against members wishes in their rules, and heres me thinking it was a game of gentlemen set up democratically.
The other very silly rule I have come accross is that away teams are not allowed to practice before the match on away greens! what possible reason could there be for this? the home team are allowed to practice on a green they should already be aware of and the away team cant warm up or have the courtesy of getting used to rub of the green prior to starting. I could understand it if the rule stated home teams cannot practice on their own green prior to a match as they should already jolly well know it quite well.!!
Does anyone have any views on this or any help they could offer as shouldnt the people who make these silly rules be replaced with more competant rule makers?
